The Journey and What You Will See Along the Way
Azrou is approximately 70 kilometres south of Fez, and the road climbs steadily from the Saïss plain into the Middle Atlas as you travel. The landscape changes noticeably: the flat agricultural land around Fez gives way to rolling forested hills and then the higher cedar plateau around Ifrane and Azrou. Even on a clear day with no stops, the drive takes around an hour to an hour and a half depending on road conditions and traffic. It is a genuinely pleasant journey, and not one to rush.
The road between Fez and Azrou passes through Ifrane — a small town with a distinctive European-influenced architecture built during the French protectorate period. Some travellers choose to stop briefly in Ifrane before continuing to Azrou. If your time is limited, it is reasonable to skip the stop and save your energy for the cedar forest. The route itself, particularly the final stretch through forest and mountain scenery, is part of the experience.
Your Main Transport Options
The most flexible option for most travellers is a private taxi or hired car with a driver, either arranged in Fez or through your accommodation. This gives you control over departure time, allows stops along the way, and means you are not dependent on fitting your plans to a public transport schedule. Costs vary and change; get a clear agreement before you depart. If you plan to continue south from Azrou to Midelt, Errachidia, or the Draa Valley, having private transport for the full day makes the logistics considerably simpler.
Shared grands taxis and buses also connect Fez and Azrou via the CTM or Supratours network and via shared taxi ranks. These are slower and less flexible but substantially cheaper, and they are used regularly by both locals and budget-conscious travellers. Confirm current departure points and approximate journey durations locally when you arrive in Fez — timetables and departure points change, and published information can go out of date. The journey in shared transport typically involves a change at Azrou's main bus stop or taxi rank.
Arriving in Azrou: First Steps
Azrou is compact enough that most accommodation, restaurants, and the town centre are within easy walking distance of the main taxi and bus arrival point. If you are meeting a local guide, confirm the exact meeting point in advance — the cedar forest trailheads are a short drive from the town centre and easily reached on foot or by local taxi. The forest begins almost immediately outside the town, so the transition from town to wilderness is quicker than most visitors expect.
If you arrive without a reservation, the town has enough accommodation that you can usually find something on the day outside peak periods. In July and August, and around Moroccan national holidays, it is worth booking ahead. Settle in, eat something, and let the altitude and quieter pace register before charging straight into the forest — you will enjoy it more for having taken ten minutes to arrive.
Combining the Fez–Azrou Journey with a Larger Circuit
Many travellers use the Fez–Azrou route as the first leg of a longer Middle Atlas or southern Morocco circuit. From Azrou it is straightforward to continue toward the Ziz Valley, the Todra Gorge, or Marrakech via the high south. Alternatively, a short loop from Fez taking in Meknès, Volubilis, and Azrou before returning to Fez is a well-established three or four day itinerary. Azrou fits naturally into either pattern without feeling like a detour.
If you are combining Azrou with Ifrane, most travellers find that Azrou makes a better base: the accommodation is more varied, the forest access is immediate, and the town has more of its own character. Ifrane is pleasant for a stop but primarily functions as a summer resort for Moroccan families; Azrou has a working Amazigh market town at its heart that sustains interest beyond a single afternoon.
